"Many thanks to the folks at New Covenant Presbyterian Church for their support and warm hospitality! They have made each of our trips special."

-A Testimony from a CBF Relief Worker

Hurricane Relief Efforts

During the first weeks after Katrina and Rita, we worked to provide the basic necessities to our community and those in need around us. Water, Ice, food, baby supplies, clothes and cleaning supplies were picked up and delivered to hundreds. We are currently shifting from a relief effort to a recovering and rebuilding effort. Although we will continue to have limited supplies for people who come by, most of our efforts are now concentrated on helping with recovery and beginning to rebuild. We are currently housing and feeding various work groups from around the world who are coming to help people rebuild. Workers of all ages and skill levels are contributing to the efforts and we would love for you to join us!

What a Year!
The year after Katrina has been one of disaster and hope. Through 365 days of Katrina, we have experienced 365 of Christ. Here's just a snapshot of what has gone on at New Covenant and in our area:

  • We have housed 1,442 workers from around the world.
  • We have provided 10,854 meals
  • More than 80 projects have been worked on
  • We have collected more than $118,994 in funds for relief work from individuals and organizations across the United States and Canada.

Here are some of the projects we have been focusing on:

Morris Hill Baptist Church --Lacombe, La.
An 85 year old African American church with a predominantly older congregation and in a poor area. We are planning on renovating the interior of this church that was flooded (8 to 10 feet of water). It does have cinder block walls so reconstruction will be easier that a complete tear down. Work has begun, hopefully this week we will know about roof situation.

C. Family Home--Lacombe, LA
These people are a wonderful family we met after the storm when someone encouraged us to drive down the street they live on. Their home had never flooded before, and this time took 8 feet of water. Mr. C. had built this home, wall by wall, himself. They are in their seventies, live on fixed income, and have one of their children and one of her kids living with them. We have gutted the interior and are now down to support beams and have found major problems. But we are bringing the home to life very slowly. This project will include rebuilding a home from the inside wall by wall.

Collins' Habitat Home--Mandeville, LA
We as a church built this Habitat home two years ago. It took four trees during Katrina and has been condemned. Working with Habitat we will rebuild the home providing the labor for a rebuild.

Juanita's Home--Lacombe, LA
Juanita is an example of the widow so frequently mentioned in the Bible. She is poor, lives in very impoverished conditions, an owns a small piece of property which contains a home which was previously flooded. Our goal here is to tear down the structure that was previously flooded and rebuild her a small home, elevated to the proper level.

Other projects and homes are being identified and scheduled for work groups. We have several more projects in the beginning stages and in the planning stages.
